No Watch/No Phone

No Tech Post Two

The other day I asked myself the question: what would happen if I didn't have a watch or a phone? So I did an experiment and I went out in Hong Kong for most of the day without either–all I brought with me was $200hkd and an Octopus card for emergencies. The photos above are either from the previous or following days or very early before leaving for my adventure/workout.

I did not get lost (too much). I did not take pictures (no camera either). I did, however, run, walk and hike all over the New Territories for more than ten-plus hours. I walked the streets and took stairs and ran on the trails. And trust me, there are more upsides than downsides to doing it without the tech and distractions (crutches?)

Yes, I had to plan ahead--and that's good--it made me do it. Honestly, I couldn't even imagine doing it beforehand–it seemed completely impossible. Now, I have to admit, I kind of enjoyed it. It gave me an entirely different and far more connected experience than I would have had otherwise. And it was also far more gratifying and satisfying both because it was hard and because I was better prepared.

Try it. You may find, as I did, that you see things better and enjoy them more. It puts you in the moment. And it's worth it.
